Trying to create digital video files from camcorder?
I have been trying unsuccessfully to create video files which can be viewed in Win Media Player. I plugged in a Firewire and was able to capture the video from my camcorder in Movie Maker but then the wmv files looked wonky when I opened them in Media Player. The only thing that worked was to save it as an avi file but the quality wasn’t good enough despite the big file size. Is there a way to save it as an mpeg direct from Movie Maker? I can’t figure out how.
MPEG formats will be of lower quality than the original DV files, so that’s not the best route if you want best quality.
You want an output file that has exactly the same settings as your input DV files, so that nothing changes. Even then, playback in Media Player might look a little odd or choppy because of how the computer processes things; it’s doing numerous tasks at once, after all.
When finishing your video, you can save it in DV format, so there’s no change from the original format. Instead of selecting “Best quality for playback on my computer (recommended),” click “Show more choices…” and select “Other settings.” Choose “DV-AVI (NTSC)” (or PAL, depending on where you are in the world). This is a surefire way to get the full quality you want. Don’t worry about how it looks in Media Player. That’s subject to a variety of things. This is the format you want.

I seem to have misunderstood your question. Sorry, it’s late! If you’re making the video for the SOLE purpose of playing it back in Media Player, it really depends on your machine. Perhaps the “Best quality for playback on my computer (recommended)” might be the best option. Or, check your computer’s power settings, especially if you’re on a laptop; make sure you’ve optimized for something like “On-screen presentation.” This usually applies to laptops, might not be so important in desktops. You can also try shutting down unneccessary tasks that can cause jerky playback. If you want to kill ALL background tasks, do the following, and do it carefully:
1) Ctrl-Alt-Delete, open Task Manager.
2) Click the “Processes” tab.
3) READ CAREFULLY: Click “User Name” heading to sort by username. You should see all the tasks using your computer username; “jsmith,” or “home,” or some personalized name like that, will now be at the top of the list.
4) READ CAREFULLY: End ONLY the processes with YOUR username (NOT “Local Service,” “Network Service,” or “System”). In addition, do NOT end “explorer.exe” or “taskmgr.exe”
You will have shut down all your memory-hogging processes. Everything except the bare essentials for your computer to run. This might be overkill, but it will give you the best possible performance in those situations where you need the best possible performance. Just make sure to log off and log on again when you’re done, so that all those tasks start up again, including anti-virus software and things like that.
